Sinusitis is a condition in which the tissue lining the sinuses(small hollow spaces within the facial bones that connect to nasal openings) get inflamed or swollen.Sinuses are lined with cells that produce mucous.Sinusitis can occur when too much mucous build up in the sinuses or their openings become blocked.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Sinusitis

Nasya: Nasya is the main line of treatment for Sinusitis in Ayurveda. It is one of the five detoxification procedures mentioned in Ayurveda. In Nasya, the medicated oil are administered through the nostrils;it pass through the nasal passage, penetrates the nasal mucosal lining and scrapes out the accumulated mucous in the sinuses.Medicated oils and quantity of drops are selected after assessing the condition of the patient
Before starting nasya treatment;massage is done on face,neck and shoulder area using medicated oils followed by steam to liquify the solidified mucus.

Dhoomapana(inhalation of medicated smoke): Inhalation of fumes of medicated varti prepared of medicated powders is done as post nasya therapy to pull out the excess mucous lodged in the sinus linings.Here the medicated smoke is inhaled through nose and released through mouth.

Gandusha: Gandusha is a procedure of holding fluids inside mouth.It helps to dislodge the residual mucous and clears the pathway to the nose and throat.

Lepam – For headache associated with sinusitis,medicated pastes are applied over forehead.
